T5 Light Bulbs
T5 bulbs are tube-shaped fluorescent light bulbs with a 5/8-inch diameter, which is roughly the size of a dime. They are available in wattages from 4 watts to 13 watts, from 14 watts to 35 watts, and from 24 watts to 80 watts. They use a G5 bipin socket, which is smaller than the socket on the more commonly used T8 lamps. This means these lights need to be used with specialized lighting fixtures designed for the smaller lamp.
T5 light tubes are slightly shorter than the length of similar sized T8 and T12 lamps. For example, a 2-foot T5 lamp will measure 21.6 inches in length, compared to 23.3 inches for a T8 lamp. Some lighting systems can accept both types of lights by switching sockets and ballasts, provided the smaller tube length is not a problem.
How T5 Fluorescent Bulbs Work
T5 lights work on the same principle of all fluorescent bulbs. These tubes contain a low-pressure mercury vapor gas that, when excited with an electric current, produces an ultraviolet light. The tubes are coated on the inside with phosphor, and the ultraviolet light causes that coating to glow. This efficiently converts electricity into visible light, providing a great way to light a variety of situations.
T5 fluorescent bulbs are more costly than other lighting options because they require a ballast to regulate the current. However, the lower energy cost often outweighs the higher purchase price.
